Massage Therapist Requirements in Illinois

In order to become a licensed massage therapist in the State of Illinois, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Complete a 600-hour massage therapist training course
  • Provide evidence of a passing score on the NCBTMB exam
  • Complete a criminal history record check form to request state criminal background check

After you complete a 600-hour training program, you then can fill out an application to become a therapist. You must mail in the application to the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation, along with a cashier’s check or money order for $175. The form can be found here.

In addition, original transcripts from the massage therapy school where training was completed must be sent directly to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Following licensure, note that all massage therapists must complete at least 24 hours of continuing education every two years. Failure to complete those hours may be grounds for revocation of a massage therapist license.
