Massage Therapist Requirements in Tennessee

In order to become a licensed massage therapist in the State of Tennessee, you must:

  • Provide evidence of a passing score on the NCETMB, NCETM, or MBLEx exams
  • Submit two letters of reference from licensed health professionals
  • Provide a copy of a birth certificate or passport
  • Submit a criminal background check
  • Complete a 500-hour massage therapist training course including:

1. 200 hours of sciences;

2. 200 hours of massage theory;

3. 85 hours of allied modalities;

4. 10 hours of ethics; and

5. 5 hours of Tennessee massage statutes and regulations.(CPR).

    After you complete a 500-hour training program, you then can fill out an application to become a massage therapist. You must mail in the application to the Tennessee Massage Licensure Board, along with a check or money order for $280. The form can be found here.

    Finally, your signature on the application must be notarized. This can result in a small fee. We suggest you contact your bank regarding their price for this service. Note that many credit unions provide this service for free to their members.

    In addition, original transcripts from the massage therapy school where training was completed must be sent directly to the Tennessee Massage Licensure Board.

    Following licensure, note that all massage therapists must complete at least 25 hours of continuing education every two years. These continuing education hours must include two hours pertaining to federal and Tennessee statutes and rules concerning massage therapist and establishments and two hours pertaining to the management of practicing massage therapy, or to professional ethics, or to substance abuse. Failure to complete these hours may result in a refusal to renew your massage therapist license by the board.
