Massage Therapist Requirements in Wisconsin

In order to become a licensed massage therapist in the State of Wisconsin, you must:

  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Have a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Provide evidence of a passing score on the, NCETMB, NCETM, NCCAOM, or MBLEx exams
  • Provide a copy of your current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillators (AED) certificate
  • Show proof of malpractice liability insurance of at least $1,000,000
  • Complete an online jurisprudence exam
  • Complete a 600-hour massage therapist training course including:

1. 150 hours of anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology;

2. 50 hours of business, law & ethics;

3. 300 hours of massage therapy or bodywork theory, technique and practice; and

4. 5 hours of adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillators (AED), and first aid.

After you complete a 600-hour training program, you then can fill out an application to become a massage therapist. You must mail in the application to the Wisconsin Massage Therapy and Bodywork Therapy Affiliated Credentialing Board, along with a check or money order for $150. The form can be found here.

Finally, your signature on the application must be notarized. This can result in a small fee. We suggest you contact your bank regarding their price for this service. Note that many credit unions provide this service for free to their members.

In addition, original transcripts from the massage therapy school where training was completed must be sent directly to the Wisconsin Massage Therapy and Bodywork Therapy Affiliated Credentialing Board.

Following licensure, massage therapists are not currently required to complete continuing education to renew their license.
